The Four-Oh-One on the Big PHAT Hat Tournament August 7-8, 2005
What is a Hat?
A 'hat' is a system of team selection wherein players rate themselves according to skill, speed and experience. The players are then grouped according to their rating, with the top-ranked players' names placed in one group or a figurative 'hat', the lowest-ranked in another and so on. Then players' names are drawn from each 'hat' to form a team so that in the end, you will have a team with adequate top, average and least-skilled players. This system allows the skill and experienced to be spread out among all the teams while providing a social venue to get to know new or other players from different teams, whom you wouldn't normally talk to 'coz they're "the enemy"...
Why have a Hat now?
Once upon a time, Ultimate players in a Manila (a good number of them) clamored for a Hat League - an extended competition wherein the club teams will be dissolved for the moment and be grouped randomly via the Hat system.
Well, the idea didn't fly as high as expected so it was scrapped. As a compromise, it was decided to just hold a Hat Tournament. Instead of one season of "bonding" with players you don't normally get to play with, players will have an entire weekend to play in a tournament together.
Thus the Big Phat Hat Tournament was hatched...
What is the Big Phat Hat Tournament?
A full 2-days Ultimate clinic/tournament mixing and matching the various players of Philippine Ultimate.
What makes it special?
To address the issue of raising the quality of play of Philippine Ultimate, the organizers have invited several well-known players from the South East Asian region to coach the teams and impart their knowledge and experience to the fledgling players of the PUA.
What will it be like?
It will be exciting, action-packed and fun. Exciting because disc superstars from Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai are coming over to give personal lessons on strategy, technique and form in clinics during the morning of Saturday. Action-packed, because each team will be expected to apply this knowledge in an actual round-robin tournament format for the rest of Saturday, with semi-finals and finals matches on Sunday. And fun, because you will meet and interact with the top players from other countries, get to know new Ulti-"mates", plus of course, the parties. For what is an Ultimate tournament without a party after, right?
Why should I sign up?
If you consider yourself an Ultimate player, then that should be reason enough...
