So it was a quiet weekend. Not very eventful at all. We had a few people over for some beers, hardly anything to talk about. Lance wore a cool mask. That was the highlight really.

9 Open teams, 4 Women’s teams, and a massive 32 Mixed teams. 700 participants. Thank you so very much to all of you who came to Manila and helped us make the 2009 WFDF Manila Spirits AOUCC such a successful tournament. We received a lot of very positive feedback, thank you to all who sent us messages to let us know how much fun you had. We had a terrific time hosting you and can’t thank you enough for your support. Rest assured that we’ll be taking your suggestions on board for Spirits 2010.

Took a while to get this info out as we, the board, had to piece together what happened, who won what. We were just as drunk as you were.

Let’s start with the parties. Thursday was chill, as it was meant to be. Friday saw people getting their groove on with some great beats and funky head wear. The Saturday party was a hedonist’s heaven. The Sunday party on the field was absolute carnage.

“The governing body of Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, the Philippine Ultimate Association, or the PUA, hosted its annual Manila Spirits tournament last November 6 to 8 on the fields of Alabang Country Club. Manila Spirits 2009 was much larger than past years as the PUA accepted the opportunity to host the 2009 World Flying Disc Federation Asia-Oceania Ultimate Club Championships (2009 WFDF AOUCC for short), to run concurrently with Manila Spirits.

The tournament consisted of three divisions. The AOUCC Open division, the AOUCC Women’s division, and the AOUCC Mixed/Manila Spirits division.

The AOUCC Open division, comprising of all men’s teams, and the AOUCC Women’s division were both run on November 6. The Open division consisted of nine teams in total, with the Philippines, Japan, Australia and China being represented. After a long, hard day of play, the gold medal in the Open division was won by Japan’s Link, a team made up of businessmen who have continued playing Ultimate since their college days. It was an amazing feat considering the thin roster Link sent over. Link, seeded second, won the gold medal 11-6 over our very own Boracay Dragons, who were seeded third. The bronze was won by another incredible Japanese team, the Chukyo University Flippers, who beat Chinese team CUUP for the medal.

The Women’s division was played out between four teams, with China, the Philippines, Thailand and Australia being represented. The gold medal was won by Pilipinas Bebots, formed by the Team Philippines women. They took the title over D-CUUP, a very strong team made up of China’s best female Ultimate talent. The Boracay Dragonitas took home the bronze medal, beating Thailand in their play-off.

The AOUCC Mixed division was run together with Manila Spirits Mixed on November 7 and 8. Every available slot was filled, with thirty-two teams from Manila, the provinces, and the Asia Oceanic region submitting strong rosters. Seven hundred players participated, the largest Manila Spirits ever by far.

Last year’s champion Team Philippines was seeded first, last year’s runner-up Black Flag was seeded second, and Australian team Sizzle was seeded third.

All thirty-two teams played four games on their first day of play. The teams were then separated into their respective pools (A, B, C, or D) for the next day, based on their first day results.

The pool A championship was eventually won by Black Flag, a team made up of Ultimate freaks from around the globe. They defeated Singapore team Shiok 13-4 in the final. Shiok surprised everyone this year with their strong roster and tremendous athletic ability.

Despite being overall tournament champion, Black Flag participated in the Manila Spirits Mixed division, not the WFDF sanctioned AOUCC Mixed division, meaning AOUCC Mixed participants Shiok won the AOUCC Mixed division gold medal. Team Philippines won the silver medal and the Boracay Dragons won the bronze.

Local team Sunken Pleasure won pool B. Pool C was won by Dumaguete Extreme. Davao Mulatto won the pool D championship.

Of course, Filipino hospitality shone through the entire weekend. A great time was had by all and many teams have already indicated that they will be sure to return for Manila Spirits 2010.

Choice of two Somerset properties in Makati: Somerset Millennium or Somerset Olympia

- Thursday night Registration Party will be at the poolside of Somerset Millennium
- Both properties will serve as pick-up/drop-off points for buses to and from the fields
- Apartments are spacious
- Inclusive of breakfast (Studio: 2 daily, 2-Bedroom: 4 daily)
- Inclusive use of the swimming pool, fitness center, and self-service laundry room
- Special tournament rates are available for bookings on the nights of Nov. 4-9
- Bookings must be made by Sept. 30
- Note that the maximum number of persons per room is 2 per Studio and 4 per 2-Bedroom. 1 extra bed per room is available upon request subject to availability

We’re skipping Sept 20 for Iligan’s Ultimate Diyandi Festival, so fill those slots! This weekend will be buffer if there are any cancellations on day 1 or 2
Day 3 – Sept 27
Day 4 – Oct 4
Finals – Oct 10

Double round-robin with 4 brackets of 6 this time (A: #1-6, B: #7-12, C: #13-18, D: #19-24). So everyone will have 10 games in the 4 round-robin weeks. Finals will still be 3 groups of 8 (top bracket will be A pool plus top 2 in B).

Whether anyone drops and goes up after the first round-robin will be decided at the captains meeting, date TBA.

Philippine Ultimate definitely represented at the recently held Singapore Ultimate Open, with 3 quality teams competing in the Pool A bracket — reigning Singapore 08 runner-up Team Philippines (who was mind-boggingly “seeded” 3rd or 4th), reigning HK Open champs Sunken Pleasure (even more mind-boggingly seeded at 7th), and returning Singapore B-Pool Champs Kidlat.

Saturday saw all Philippine teams playing 5 games in the brutal Singaporean heat (forecast for the weekend was rain. Not!) and in less-than ideal fields (to say that Anchorvale is not the best field to hold an international tourney is an understatement) . SP dominatedwith decisive wins against Disc Knights and China United among others. TP plowed through their competition with blow-outs against Disc Indo, Shiok, and Vietnam Vudoo. While Kidlat won enough games to place them at the top of the B-Pool at the end of the day.

There was no free beer on field on Saturday and the party was equally disappointing. Sigh.

Sunday started with TP winning their quarters against Australia-based Sizzle and SP defeating Bangkok’s Soidawgz. The morning’s upset was Freakshow (ranked first for some reason) losing to Singaporean coed team Disc Knights Orange (for all you boys, the only name that matters in DK Orange is Chong Pei, who caught the winning catch at universal point). Mo’Chi (ringer team consisted of Asia Ultimate superstars Uli and Yoshio, and our very own Bats Cuyugan) meanwhile easily got through quarters with their win against Shiok.

No doubt the most anticipated game against Sunday was the showdown between SP and TP — a math that was so quality, it should’ve been the finals. SP’s power O-line of Xtian, Peng, Karla, Carlo, Cherry, Camille and Panoy matched points with TP’s all-star O-line of Reema, Wendell, Pia, Nica, Jeffrey, Derek and Buboy/JC/Will. It was a really exciting match that showed everyone watching how far Philippine ultimate has come. In the end, TP pulled away and won over SP 11-8 (I think).

The after-game huddle between the two powerhouses was made poignant thanks to Peng’s emotional speech — one that I hope was recorded. And for the record Jasper, you’re the only one who will ever admit he’s in his “twilight” years (look at Wendell. Never say die!).

Finally, finals between TP and Mo’Chi. TP led most, if not all, of the way, thanks to impressive defensive and offensive plays much to the delight of the crowd — who kept yelling “Pilipinas” or “Pinas” or “Penis” (depending on the accent). Most notable moments were definitely Jeffrey’s lay out D’s and endzone hucks to Dereka and Yosu’s massive endzone layout defense even if 2 Mo’Chi players were way ahead of him. Memories not worth keeping — TP guys cramping up on the field. One word boys: hydrate!

At 10-6 (TP favor) soft cap was called (in SUO there’s a softcap at the final) which made the final a race to 12. After trading points, the score was then at 11-7 — TP had 4 match points to take the Open. After a quick series of unfortunate turnovers, the score was suddenly at 11-all. A fumble within TP’s offensive line turned the disc over and wa quickly picked up by Uli who hucked it to Yoshio for the win. Goddammit.

So yes, we lost. Hay naku talaga!

Another touching post-game huddle, this time by TP, SP, and Kidlat — all the Philippine teams. I really hope someone video’d this because of all the words said by Xtian, Derek, Jude, and Wendell. Mabuhay ang Philippine Ultimate!!

Mythical went to Pia Ybanez (normal!) and Ollie! Wuhoo! But honestly, I thought Jeffrey deserved to be there. The boy has come of age.

M&M 2009 "Bonnie and Clyde" League Schedule: Day 1

Manila Spirits/AOUCC 2009

It is official. We have been awarded the Asia Oceanic Ultimate Club Championships 2009 (AOUCC 2009).

The tournament will be held on Nov 6 to 8, 2009 at Alabang Country Club, Alabang, Metro Manila. Depending on the number of teams and divisions, registration will be on November 5.

The plan is for mixed, women’s, and open divisions as long as there are enough teams for each division (WFDF requires 4 teams to qualify as an official AOUCC division). It is club based and will be a basis for qualifications for the World Club Championships 2010 in Prague.

Eligibility requirements are still being finalized. From what we currently know, it is a club competition and not necessarily a “national team” format one, but we’ll keep you posted when we get official word if players should still be representing a country and if non-Asia based players would be allowed.

So mark your calendars and file those leaves! Spirits this year will be HUGE!
