From ousted portavoz de la junta, Rick Cayzer:

So it was a quiet weekend. Not very eventful at all. We had a few people over for some beers, hardly anything to talk about. Lance wore a cool mask. That was the highlight really.

9 Open teams, 4 Women’s teams, and a massive 32 Mixed teams. 700 participants. Thank you so very much to all of you who came to Manila and helped us make the 2009 WFDF Manila Spirits AOUCC such a successful tournament. We received a lot of very positive feedback, thank you to all who sent us messages to let us know how much fun you had. We had a terrific time hosting you and can’t thank you enough for your support. Rest assured that we’ll be taking your suggestions on board for Spirits 2010.

Took a while to get this info out as we, the board, had to piece together what happened, who won what. We were just as drunk as you were.

Let’s start with the parties. Thursday was chill, as it was meant to be. Friday saw people getting their groove on with some great beats and funky head wear. The Saturday party was a hedonist’s heaven. The Sunday party on the field was absolute carnage.

Check out some of the cool Z-Day costumes we saw at the Saturday night party:

“The governing body of Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, the Philippine Ultimate Association, or the PUA, hosted its annual Manila Spirits tournament last November 6 to 8 on the fields of Alabang Country Club. Manila Spirits 2009 was much larger than past years as the PUA accepted the opportunity to host the 2009 World Flying Disc Federation Asia-Oceania Ultimate Club Championships (2009 WFDF AOUCC for short), to run concurrently with Manila Spirits.

The tournament consisted of three divisions. The AOUCC Open division, the AOUCC Women’s division, and the AOUCC Mixed/Manila Spirits division.

The AOUCC Open division, comprising of all men’s teams, and the AOUCC Women’s division were both run on November 6. The Open division consisted of nine teams in total, with the Philippines, Japan, Australia and China being represented. After a long, hard day of play, the gold medal in the Open division was won by Japan’s Link, a team made up of businessmen who have continued playing Ultimate since their college days. It was an amazing feat considering the thin roster Link sent over. Link, seeded second, won the gold medal 11-6 over our very own Boracay Dragons, who were seeded third. The bronze was won by another incredible Japanese team, the Chukyo University Flippers, who beat Chinese team CUUP for the medal.

The Women’s division was played out between four teams, with China, the Philippines, Thailand and Australia being represented. The gold medal was won by Pilipinas Bebots, formed by the Team Philippines women. They took the title over D-CUUP, a very strong team made up of China’s best female Ultimate talent. The Boracay Dragonitas took home the bronze medal, beating Thailand in their play-off.

The AOUCC Mixed division was run together with Manila Spirits Mixed on November 7 and 8. Every available slot was filled, with thirty-two teams from Manila, the provinces, and the Asia Oceanic region submitting strong rosters. Seven hundred players participated, the largest Manila Spirits ever by far.

Last year’s champion Team Philippines was seeded first, last year’s runner-up Black Flag was seeded second, and Australian team Sizzle was seeded third.

All thirty-two teams played four games on their first day of play. The teams were then separated into their respective pools (A, B, C, or D) for the next day, based on their first day results.

The pool A championship was eventually won by Black Flag, a team made up of Ultimate freaks from around the globe. They defeated Singapore team Shiok 13-4 in the final. Shiok surprised everyone this year with their strong roster and tremendous athletic ability.

Despite being overall tournament champion, Black Flag participated in the Manila Spirits Mixed division, not the WFDF sanctioned AOUCC Mixed division, meaning AOUCC Mixed participants Shiok won the AOUCC Mixed division gold medal. Team Philippines won the silver medal and the Boracay Dragons won the bronze.

Local team Sunken Pleasure won pool B. Pool C was won by Dumaguete Extreme. Davao Mulatto won the pool D championship.

Does AOUCC 2009 replace the annual Manila Spirits tournament?
No. AOUCC will be held in conjunction with Manila Spirits. AOUCC is slated to have three divisions: Womens, Open and Mixed (provided enough teams join). Manila Spirits will just be Mixed as usual. The plan right now is for the Mixed divisions of AOUCC and Manila Spirits to be joined together. The Mixed division winner will be Manila Spirits champion. The highest finisher that meets AOUCC eligibility requirements will be AOUCC champion. They could be one and the same if the winner meets AOUCC eligibility requirements.

Note: This AOUCC is a club tournament, unlike the Taiwan AOUC in 2007 which was one team per country in each division.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Please read this document - WFDF Ultimate Team Eligibility Rules for Club Championships. In summary, to qualify for AOUCC, your team must be endorsed by your national association, and your national association must use these guidelines to give their endorsement.

The tournament is November 6 to 8, 2009. Why three days and not the usual two?
Due to the increase in divisions and the expected number of teams, we have added another day to accommodate the additional games. AOUCC Open and Mixed will be held on November 6. AOUCC Mixed and Manila Spirits will be held together on November 7 and 8.

Does the result affect seedings for any future WFDF tournaments?
No. AOUCC 2009 is for bragging rights.

Do we need to reserve bids and is there a strict deadline?
Yes. The deadline for foreign teams to join is September 30, 2009. After that it will depend on how many spots we have left. For Philippine provincial teams, only one spot will be allocated per city until September 30. After September 30, we will open up the remaining spots for Manila teams and other provincial teams that want to join. Deadline for local teams is October 11, 2009. Hopefully we will be able to accommodate all teams who want to join, but we would like to guarantee participation from as many countries as are interested, so we have given them priority for registration. There is a possibility of a qualifier for Manila teams if we cannot accommodate everyone.

Is there a team cap on how many teams a country can enter in each division?
Not at the moment. However, if we start to get more interest than the fields can handle, we will need to put in restrictions.

What is the minimum number of teams required for each division? The rules say four teams, but WFDF would prefer to have six to make it a worthwhile competition for those coming. If the teams coming are okay with only four, we can petition WFDF or we can try to get Manila teams to merge from mixed to join women’s and men’s to try to fill up needed spots.

Can someone play in more than one division (ie open and mixed or women’s and mixed)?
Yes. An additional player registration fee will be charged.

Is there a minimum and maximum number of players per team?
Yes. Minimum 14. Maximum 28.

How much is the registration fee?
Due to strong sponsorship response, there is no team registration fee. The breakdown of the player registration fees can be found here – Manila Spirits & AOUCC 2009 registration fees

What is an AOUCC non-eligible player?
A player who will only be participating in Spirits, not AOUCC. Players can of course participate in both Spirits and AOUCC Open or Womens.
